He was a man of many idiosyncracies and eccentricities, one ofwhich was talking to himself during his later years. He wouldvisit places of business and quietly sit for an hour muttering tohimself, or he could be seen walking the street talking to himself,and emphasizing his conversation with gestures of the hand. Itwas absent-mindedness, not from mental aberration. April Eighth, SETH GRAHAM SETH GRAHAM AN old-timer in Des Moines, and one of its best-known citi-zens is Seth Graham, a genuine Buckeye, bom in WayneCoimty, Ohio, April Thirteenth, 1831, of Scottish ancestors,who emigrated to America in 1793. In 1838, his father moved to Pike County, Illinois, where, as amillwright, he resided imtil 1842, when he removed to PerryCoimty, Illinois. In the meantime, Seth attended the districtschools, assisted his father, and became familiar with the use ofmechanical tools. In Perry County, he was employed in a wagonshop, carpenter shop, and did mill work for two years. In 1849, when eighteen years of age, he struck out for himself,and paddled his own canoe. In 1850, he landed in Iowa, and wentto burning lime in Cedar County for fifteen dollars per month. Inthe Fall of that year, he made a contract with IST. L.
