Parkinson's disease brain stimulation operation. X-rays and a computed tomography (CT) scan of the head of a 54-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease during (top) and after (bottom) an operation to implant deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes in her brain. This neurosurgical treatment involves the implantation of electrodes (white) in deep areas of the brain, linked through the scalp to wires leading to a pacemaker (not seen). This sends electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain, helping to negate and control the effects of the disease. At lower left is a frontal X-ray. At lower right is an axial CT scan. The top image shows the stereotaxic equipment used during the surgery to ensure precise placement of the electrodes.
