Deer Warts 1
This is an uncomfortable image, but important for wildlife biologists. Deer cutaneous fibroma, deer warts, are not uncommon among young deer. Occasionally, they appear in such excess that they interfere with feeding or vision to such an extent that they become detrimental to the deer's health or survival. The good news is that deer warts are mostly found among young animals, who develop an immunity as they mature. This specimen was treated the same as other deer in its herd, and itself behaved as if unconscious of its disfigurement. Deer warts pose no health risk to other species, humans included, that consume an infected animal's flesh.
