The main door at the front end of thecar, 32 in. wide, is used for both exit and entrancepurposes, in order to minimize the amount of spacerequired and hence reduce the weight. This door isof the two-leaf, folding type and is arranged to openoutwardly in such a manner that the retardation of. Car, 22 Ft. The door and step are oper-ated pneumatically and controlled by the brake valvehandle. The rear emergency exit door is placeddirectly in the center of the car. It is held securelyin position by two locks, one operated pneumaticallyand the other manually. The pneumatic lock is un-locked automatically by an emergency application ofthe air brakes, which may be obtained at thewill of the operator, or by an emergency cord thatextends through the car, or automatically if for anyreason the operator suddenly removes his handfrom the controller handle. After the door has beenunlocked pneumatically by any of these means, it isstill in a locked position until someone releases themanually-operated lock.
