The Medes and Per-sians are at this period no more powerful than the Zimri, theMinni, the Urarda, ^^^ or than half a dozen others of the bordernations, whose appellations sound strange in the ears even ofthe advanced student. Neither of the two great Arian peo-ples had as yet a capital city, neither was miited imder aking; separated into numerous tribes, each under its chief,dispersed in scattered towns and villages, poorlj* fortified ornot fortified at all, they were in the same condition as the Heada of Eunuchs (Nimrud)..
