Master from Alkmaar Seven works of mercy 1504
An unknown Alkmaar painter made this seven-panelled polyptych for St Lawrence's church in Alkmaar. Depicted here are the seven works of charity: feeding the hungry, refreshing the thirsty, clothing the naked, burying the dead, receiving travellers, visiting the sick and comforting prisoners. Inscriptions below, on the frame, indicate which work of charity is depicted. The frame is one of the oldest original frames in the museum.
