Railroad authori-ties at Scranton, Pa., have been ex-perimenting with superheaters on twolocomotives for several months, and itwas particularly interesting to have thepleasure of hearing the experimentsdescribed by the veteran Mr. DavidBrown, the assistant superintendent ofmotive power, and his able inspector,Mr. John W. Maysilles, who has ac-companied the locomotives in theirdaily trips. The engines are of the Americanpassenger 4-4-0 type, built at Schenec-tady, and began running in May thisyear. They are of the culm-burning,Wooten fire box kind, peculiar to thecoal regions. No. 953 was furnishedwith the Richardson balanced slidevalve, while No. 955 was equipped withpiston valves. Both were also fur-nished with the Richardson oil pump,as manufactured by the Sight Feed. THE ^DY STEAM BOILER SUPERHEATER Co., of Milwaukee. The oil pump isdriven either by air or steam, and hasa perfectly positive arrangement, whereby it will pump if there is oilin the receiver. The superheaters were of theSchenectady type, designed by , the accomplished engineer of theAmerican Locomotive Company, andconsists of a vertical row of superheat-ing tubes, with systems of superheat-er pipes therein as shown in our illus-tration, comprising, in each tube, an in-ner pipe which is open at both its ends,an outer pipe fixed to the inner pipe for-ward of its rear end opening, and an in-termediate open-ended partition-pipe, alsoa T head divided into two chambers, oneopening to the main supply pipe and theother to the steam delivery pipe. It willbe readily seen that with suitableattachments the superheating pipes addto the main steam pipes an in-creased degree of heat fro
