A system of surgery : pathological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and operative . siderably separated, so as to increasethe transverse diameter of the limb. The joint is muchswollen and bruised, the member is completely power-less, and, when the fracture affects both prominences, there is nearly always marked shortening, often amount-ing to from one to two inches, the lower fragment beingdrawn up behind the superior by the action of the ham-string muscles. When only one condyle is broken, the deformity, other thingsbeing equal, will be less than when both suffer, and there will also, of course, beless shortening. In the specimen of vertical fracture of the condyles in my cabinet, previouslyalluded to, the short fragment is drawn upwards against the posterior surface ofthe shaft of the femur, to the distance of at least two inches, its upper surfacelooking towards the trochlea, with which it forms an obtuse angle, thus greatlyincreasing the antero-posterior diameter of the joint. The various appearancesof this rare specimen are well represented in fig. 460. Fig. Fiacture of the external condyle.
