Gambling houses were now opened in all directions, all over the city, near theSt. Marys Market, near the steamship landings, near the hotels, the boarding and lodginghouses, wherever returning soldiers or emigrants quartered or congregated. At that time certainhouses were licensed by city ordinance, such as carried on the games of rondeau and loto;and all through the night, from dusky eve to early morn, in every frequented thoroughfare,could be heard the deep and sonorous voice of the game keeper as he called time and game atrondeau.
