Hanging scroll; ink and color on paper; overall: 188 x cm (74 x 25 in.); painting only: 91 x cm (35 13/16 x 17 13/16 in.). Minghuang, a prominent emperor of Tang (618-906) China and his consort, Yang Gueifei, have inspired many legends, paintings, and poetry in later Chinese culture. Through the study of Chinese literature and the collecting of Chinese paintings, tales of their lives and romance became well-known in Muromachi Japan.
