While writing of these things, I will also call atten- tion to the fact that animals generally are the reverse of mankind, look backward instead of forward, or to the past instead of the future life. Their like is made up of memory of the past, instead . of coming events; with them it is a case of way-back, yesterday and today, rather than tomor- row or years hence, as with us.
