In 1778, Sir Peter Parker, being favorablyimpressed with Nelsons character, took him on board hisflag-ship as third lieutenant, and in a short time raised himto the first lieutenancy. Near the close of the same year. SirPeter appointed him to the command of the Badger, anarmed brig, with which he was to cruise for the protection ofthe Bay of Honduras and the Mosquito shore.
