This illustration dating to about 1500 and of Italian origin is said to show the first European representation of people in the New World and was titled "Custom of the Indians." The text accompanying the image said, "They are handsome, well shaped in body, they possess nothing wives the men take are those who please them. They also fight with each other, eat each other, and hang the flesh in the smoke. They become 150 years of age and have no government."
