Prehistoric giant wombats. Computer illustration of a group of Diprotodon sp. giant marsupials. These Australian mammals, also known as rhinoceros or giant wombats, were the largest known marsupial that ever lived. They lived from around million years ago to around 40,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, in what is now Australia. The largest specimens were the size of a hippopotamus - about 3 metres tall at the shoulder.
