Toothbrushing. Young girl brushing her teeth. Brushing teeth removes plaque and food particles from dental surfaces. Humans have two sets of teeth, primary teeth and permanent teeth. Primary teeth appear at 6 months and are then gradually replaced by permanent or adult teeth from 6 years of age. Childrens' teeth should be brushed after every meal using a fluoride toothpaste. Toothbrushes must have an easily gripped handle and soft round ended bristles. Toothbrushes should be rinsed after use and replaced as soon as the bristles become frayed or bent.
