The doctrineis as follows: That we should consider any attempton the part of European powers to extend their sys-tem to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerousto our peace and safety, and that we could roview any interposition for the purpose of oppressingor controlling Anrerican governments or provinces inany other light than as a manifestarion by Europeanpowers of an unfriendly disposition toward the UnitedStates. This doctrine immediately affected the courseof foreign governments, and has become the approvedsentiment of the United States. At the end of his second term Mr Monroe retiredto his home in Virginia, where he lived until 1830,when he went to New York to live with his son-in-law.
