Hong Kong, China street scene, 1901. With no actual street, this steep hillside has a wide stairway of low steps and narrow stairways alongside to enter businesses. The dark business sign at right says, "Pun Lun Photographer" (in English). To the left of the main street are several little booths(?) that have white cloth coverings. My guess is that those are individual chairs, for citizens tired out from walking and climbing the hill. Some people wear soft shoes and some are barefooted.
