Along thehanks of the .lainna there stretches the great fort, whose highand massive wall encloses the Mogul palaces and the Pearl , in calm ami safe retreat, is the palace of the emperor Ja-hangir, in red sandstone. Its great corridors, its magnificentoctagonal towers, its pillared halls with stone roof, its wonder-ful marble baths, its vaulted chambers, its monolithic cisterns. THE PEARL MOSQtTE. of light porphyry, its quiet marble nooks, and its pavilions foroutlook over the stretches of the Jamna valley, make it one ofthe most magnificent monuments of Mogul splendor. The Saman Burj, the palace of the empress, is concealed be-hind rich lattice-work in finest marble. Bere is the Grape Gar-den, a square of two hundred and eighty feet, where the ladiesof the court lived in all the luxuries known to the Mogul courtin the days of its greatest splendor.
