This image may not be used to state or imply NOAO endorsement of any company or product False-colour optical CCD image of the peculiar spiral galaxy NGC 4319 and the quasar Markarian 205 (small circular object, bottom). The quasar appears to be connected to the galaxy by a faint bridge of material. In the 1970s, Markarian 205 was considered \the fulcrum of the redshift controversy\" - the debate about whether quasars were really extremely distant objects receding at enormous velocities relative to Earth. Observ- ations in the early 1980s confirmed that Markarian 205 is indeed very distant, whereas NGC 4319 is an unrelated galaxy in the line of sight."
