Interior courtyard Kalmar Slott, Kalmar Län, Småland, Sweden.

By 12 th century Kalmar keep on it's own island was part of a defensive system which, because Blekinge and Skåne to the south were at that time part of Denmark, had great strategic importance. Gustav Vasa captured it in 1525 and he and his sons rebuilt it with Renaissance decoration. The sculpted well cover, designed by Dominicus Pahr, dates from 1578. Kalmar is now Sweden's best preserved Renaissance castle.
