The line of an-cestry for the toxodonts is rather through Leontinidae. Rhynchippus pumulis Ameghino R. pumulis Amegh., 1897, Bol. Inst. Geog. Argen., t. 18, p. 464. We found no speci-mens of this species, butAmeghino has describeda complete skull, a fig-ure of which is repro-duced here. It indicatesa smaller lighter builtanimal, differing from not only in smallsize, but also in having arelatively longer and nar-rower head. The indi-vidual is a rather oldone, so that the pits ininc. I and 2 have divSap-peared, as is also thecase with the cingulumon the ant. int. cornersof the premolars. Ame-ghino gives the follow-ing measurements in his. A Fig. 66. R. pumulis—1/2 natural size; .4, top of skull;B, upper dentition, after Ameghino. description. Skull, length over all Upper dentition, from inc. i to m. 3 155 mm. MORPHIPPUS 105 Rhynchippus medianus Ameghino R. medianus Amegh., 1901, Bol. Acad. Nac. Cienc. Cordoba, t. 16, p. 375. This third species is intermediate in size between thetwo foregoing. No figure is given, but the following meas-urements give the size: Upper molar 2, length, 17 mm., width 11 mm. Length of lower molars i to 3 40 mm. Height of mandible under m. 2 24 mm. These figures would indicate a form about 15 % largerthan R. pumulis, and 35 % smaller than R. equinns. Morphippus Ameghino Morphippus, Amegh., 1897, Bol. Inst. Geog. Argen., t. 18, p. 459. This genus is very similar to Rhynchippus, with the samedental formula, the same grooves in the upper incisors, andthe same pattern of the premolars and molars. It differs, however, in the lower incisors ha\ing no cin
