Comet and Earth. View from the Moon of a large comet streaking past the Earth. Comets are icy masses which travel in highly elliptical orbits around the Sun. When they near the Sun, the heat and pressure of the solar wind cause some of their constituents to boil off into space, forming the vast tail, which may be millions of kilometres long. The tail always points away from the Sun.
