A strike that began on August 13 2008 by 20 000 dissident teachers of Section 19 of the National Union of Educational Workers SNTE in the state of Morelos has spread to 20 other states in Mexico and threatens to derail the federal government s Educational Quality Alliance reform package Educators and parents are protesting the reforms that they say will strip teachers of job security and subject them to performance exams Striking teachers have set up a permanent camp outside the government palace in Cuernavaca the capital of Morelos state Various members are symbolically crucified to protest what they say the reforms will do to them
