Not only isits presen thabitat restric-ted, but without special facilities its pursuit wouldgenerally be useless. In former days this rhinoceros probably in-habited the whole of the Terai or damp forestat the fool of the Himalayas ; and there arclegends that it, or a closely allied species (Rhinocerossondaicus), was hunted by the Em-peror Baber in the valley of theIndus. Now its western limit isthe Nepal Terai, and a consider-able blank space occurs before itis again to be met with in theBhutan Duars ; and again, stillfarther east, in Assam. Aboutforty years ago large numberswere to be found in the immediateneighbourhood of Jalpaigori, at thefoot of the Sikkim hills ; and seve-ral sportsmen made considerablesums by the
