I20 Bell Telephone Magazine SUMMER bration, the effect was so realistic thatmore than one experienced flyer leftthe ship in a sweat after the in-structor had given him a real work-out. As MIGHT be expected, the Labora-tories long experience with vacuumtubes was of great value to the wareffort. Out of all the electronic de-velopment which was going on, onesmall but dramatic incident group of repeater stations hadbeen captured in Germany, intact ex-cept for the tubes. Signal Corpsmen, ransacking employees lockers, had found one tube which fitted thesockets. In a few days that tube wasin the Laboratories; in three daysmore, eight replicas had been builtand were on their way to the frontfor service tests. Western Electric did not wait for results to filter back, however; theyturned out a thousand tubes in threeweeks. Confidence In the Labora-tories was well rewarded; the designwas right, and the tubes restoredservice on an Important European ca-ble route. One of the Laboratories
