This book is now in the possession of the Histor-ical Society of Pennsylvania, and is by far the oldest Masonic Lodgebook in America. In it are official Lodge details concerning theMasonic lives of such Masons as William Allen, Benjamin Franklin,Joseph Shippen, Philip Syng, and William Plumstead, all ProvincialGrand Masters of Pennsylvania from 1731 to 1741.^0. So far as known the first operations of Free Masonry inNorth-eastern Pennsylvania occurred in the Wyoming Val-ley in June, 1779. At that time very few white men dweltin this immediate region. Their first settlements in theValley had been made but little more than twelve yearsbefore; while the terrible massacre of the settlers by theIndians and Tories had taken place near Forty Fort notquite a twelvemonth previous.
