Constantinople. 17th-century depiction of the city of Constantinople, capital of the Ottoman Empire, here shown under the Latin title 'Constantinopolis'. The city is located either side of the strait named the Bosphorus, shown here with ships. Before its conquest in 1453, the city had been capital of the Byzantine Empire. During the Ottoman period, it increased in population from around 80,000 to some 300,000. This view shows prominent features identified by number, including numerous minarets of mosques. Two men walking with dogs are at bottom right. Published in Amsterdam in 1650, the engraving is by Rombout van den Hoeye (1622-1671) based on earlier work by Matthaeus Merian (1593-1650).
