In order to determine what results could be expected from a longingot, the following experiment was made : A bottom-cast octagonal ingot, bh feet long, 12 inches across the 636 THE PHYSICS OF Rig. 3. flats at bottom and 11 inches at top, wascut lengthwise through the center. A goodprint was obtained from an etching of thesection of this ingot, but, on account of itssize, it cannot well be reproduced. Therewere only a few traces of segregationshown by the etching, and analyses showedthat segregation had only taken place to asmall degree. We have not attempted to give all theanalyses made of samples taken. A suflB-cient number, however, are given to showthe character of metal in different portionsof the ingot. Table II. gives analyses of samplestaken from the holes shown on Fig. 3. We would call attention to severalfacts : 1. That samples from holes 16, 22 and25 show higher results than are shownfrom corresponding holes on either sideof the ingot; 2. That samples from holes 28 and 33show about the same results as correspond-ing holes on the sides ; 3. That samples from holes 36, 40, 44and 47 show results slightly lower thansamples from corresponding holes on thesides. Silico
