Asteroids Ceres and Vesta, computer scale artwork. The asteroids (Ceres is the larger one) are seen against Europe for scale (UK and Ireland at left). These two asteroids are the largest known members of the asteroid belt, a large group of rocky and icy bodies orbiting in space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Ceres, with a diameter of 950 kilometres, is classified as a dwarf planet. It accounts for around a third of the mass of the asteroid belt. Vesta, with a diameter of 530 kilometres, accounts for around 9 percent of the mass of the asteroid belt.
