13th century bridgeThe Monnow Bridge at Monmouth, originally at the edge of the town, now connects Monmouth with Overmonnow. left bank of the river Monnow, and was protected by the fortified gate on the Monnow bridge, built towards the end of the 13th century, on the site of a 12th century timber bridge. Above the gateway are openings that allowed the guards to drop things on intruders. The bridge now connects Monmouth with Overmonnow. Young lads relax by wading in and fishing at the start of the school holidays. A fish, maybe an eel, is caught jumping in the bottom right.
