TELEGBAPH PUBLICITY. Engineering for the Trade. "We are just entering upon another flower season. From October 1 to July 1 the season will be on; what it will mean to each individual is largely up to himself. We have our organization, and the machinery is, or should be, in the best of running order for the com- ing year, but at the beginning it will be well to stop for a few moments, look the entire machine over for any weak spots that may exist and see that, if any exist, they are repaired before the start. Everyone of us at some time has taken a long railroad journey and I know of no better illustration of the point I am trying to make than the engineer of one of our fast express trains. Per- haps we are embarking at the point at which the train is made up; we see the engineer bring his locomotive from the roundhouse and couple it onto the wait- ing cars. That engine has been gone over and groomed to the last minute, but is the engineer satisfied with this? The minute it is coupled we see him get down from his cab^ with his long-necked oil can, and there is not an oil cup, bearing or part of the running gear of the engine that he does not inspect in the few minutes before he starts; there is nothing taken for granted. He knows that, barring accidents, he can depend upon his engine to fulfill what is expected of it. Are You Eeally on the Job? But when the train is under way, does his vigilance lapse? No, it has really just begun; his hand is on the lever and his eyes are on the right of way and on the various gauges by which he is surrounded. The fireman is just as vigilant; his eyes are ever on the steam gauge; perhaps there is a heavy grade to ascend and more steam will be needed. The two men in the engine cab form about the best example that I know for
