(Governor Johnson, who died on September 21, was born of Swedish parents at St. Peter,] July 28, 1861. and was therefore forty-eight years old. He made his way by hi,s ownefforts and in due time editor of a paper in his native town. He became recognized asa man of mark, and served his district in the State Senate. He was elected Governor in 1904,and again in 1906, as a Democrat in a Republican State. His election was the more remark-able because the Roosevelt national ticket carried Minnesota sweepingly in 1904. He was againelected Governor in 1908 on the same day that the national ticket headed by Mr. Taft carriedthe State by a large plurality.
