Previ-ous to that he was general manager ofthe Mesaba Railway, Virginia, Minn.,and before that was general managerof the Hartford & Springfield StreetRailway, Warehouse Point, Conn., fornine years. Mr. Newton was gradu-ated from the Ohio State University asan electrical engineer. His first com-mercial work was with the GeneralElectric Company in its Lynn he was transferred to the Thom-son-Houston Company at Cincinnati andsupervised the installation of apparatuson properties throughout the CentralWest. Mr. Newton next became elec-trical engineer for the Wheeling () Railway. He left Wheeling to ac-cept the position of electrical engineerfor the Syracuse (N. Y.) Street Rad-. ii, s. NEWTON way. He afterward assumed the sameduties for the Syracuse ConsolidatedStreet Railway, and finally was em-ployed in the same capacity with theconsolidated company, the SyracuseRapid Transit Railway. He remainedat Syracuse six years and combined fora part of the time the office of super-intendent of transportation with hisengineering duties. Mr. Newton wasappointed general manager and chiefengineer of the Syracuse, Lakeside &Baldwinsville Railroad when the roadwas projected, and remained with thecompany in the capacities named duringits construction and for the first twoyears of its operation. Mr. Newtonnext became general manager of theBeaver Valley Traction Company,which consolidated four small roadsnear Pittsburgh.
