Surrounding Fort Macon's citadel is the sunken area known as the ditch, which was formerly deeper and could be turned into a moat by flooding it with sea water from a nearby canal. Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach, NC. Fort Macon was constructed after the War of 1812 to defend Beaufort Harbor. The Battle of Fort Macon was fought there during March and April 1862.
