Chicago, Illinois, USA. Three Waddell and Harrington vertical lift bridges over the Calumet River on the southeast side of Chicago.

Three Waddell and Harrington vertical lift bridges over the Calumet River on the southeast side of Chicago. All of the spans supported railroad traffic of various railroads over time, one still provides support for heavy freight traffic of the Norfolk Southern Railway as well as Amtrak passenger service. Waddell & Harrington was an engineering firm that built lift bridges for railroads and highways in the early stages of the 20th century. Behind the railroad bridges is the Chicago Skyway highway truss bridge. The Calumet River is part of a system of rivers and canals that include the Calumet, and and Little Calumet rivers. The Calumet River channel connects Lake Michigan with the highly industrialized Lake Calumet.
