An old engraving of paper currency – a one sixth of a dollar bill – used in Virginia, USA in 1777. It is from an American history book of 1895. After the American Revolutionary War began in 1775, the Continental Congress began issuing paper money known as Continental currency, or Continentals. This currency was denominated in dollars from $1⁄6 to $80. One major problem was that monetary policy was not coordinated between the states. Another issue was that the British successfully waged economic warfare by counterfeiting Continentals on a large scale (see note bottom left of bill).
An old engraving of paper currency – a one sixth of a dollar bill – used in Virginia, USA in 1777. It is from an American history book of 1895. The first ‘official’ coinage in British North America was issued by the Province of Virginia in 1775, although they were dated 1773. Five tons of coins were sent to the colony on the clipper ship Virginia and most of the coins were distributed just before the breakout of the American Revolution. After the American Revolutionary War began in 1775, the Continental Congress began issuing paper money known as Continental currency, or Continentals. This currency was denominated in dollars from $1⁄6 to $80, including many denominations in between. During the Revolution the Continental Currency dollar was valued at 6 shillings in Virginia. One major problem was that monetary policy was not coordinated between the states. Another issue was that the British successfully waged economic warfare by counterfeiting Continentals on a large scale – the note at the bottom left of this bill acknowledges this.
