Testicular inflammation. Acute inflammation of the testis and epididymis of a 70-year-old man. This condition is called epididymo-orchitis and is caused by an infection. Often there is no obvious source, but sometimes it may be due to a bacterial urinary tract infection that has spread along the vas deferens (sperm duct). In this case, it is due to the patient self-catheterising. In rare cases, epididymo-orchitis results from the spread of tuberculosis. The symptoms of severe pain and swelling are similar to testicular torsion and this needs to be ruled out. Treatment includes antibiotic drugs and rest.
