Paranthropus boisei anatomy. Artwork showing a reconstruction of the head of Paranthropus boisei (previously Australopithecus bosei), based on skull OH5 (top left) found at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, in 1959 by Mary Leakey. The skull dates to million years ago. P. boisei is an extinct species of hominid that lived during the Pliocene epoch (around to million years ago) and forms part of the human evolutionary tree; although a divergent branch to that which led to modern humans.
