A RIB used by the Department of Conservation (DOC) on the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand to check the hulls of boats for marine fouling pests. The RIB came alongside our charter yatch whilst we were at anchor, identified themselves and explained that they needed to examine the hull, specifically for fanworm. A diver in wet suit and snorkel went under the hull, gave it a thorough inspection and surfaced to give his report. Fortunately our hull was clear of biohazards and just had the usual slime after a boat had been in the water some while. The DOC is working hard to educate boaters as to the dangers of imported creatures and water plants to the indigenous flora and fauna and the important Green-Lipped Mussel industry, for which the Marlborough Sounds are famous.
