A woman with skeletal muscle wastage and lordosis (inward curvature of the spine) caused by facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHMD). The woman's daughter has inherited the disease, but her son (centre) has not. FSHMD is an autosomal dominant usually inherited form of muscular dystrophy which causes progressive weakening and wasting of the skeletal muscles, initially of the face, shoulders and upper arms. There is no cure but the disease generally progresses slowly, with most patients having a normal lifespan. Therapies are aimed at managing symptoms.
