It was planned to build it at the barrieredltalie. In 1806, according to a note dictated by theemperor, the monument was to be called the Arc deMarengo. Its site was then marked as the large space leftempty by the demolition of the Bastille. The project wassubmitted to the Academie des Beaux Arts which onlyfound fault with the spot selected.
