'Germaniae Veteris Nova Descriptio [Ancient Germany newly described]'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Johannes Janssonius. Engraved by Petrus Kaerius (Pieter van de Keere). Provenance: "Accuratissima orbis antiqui delineatio", Amsterdam. Type: Antique seventeenth century copperplate map, uncoloured. A map of ancient Germany, based on Ortelius' map, which was in turn based on the writings of Ptolemy, Pliny, Strabo et al. The map is covered with forests and old place names. It is richly decorated with two cartouches featuring warriors and cherubs. The sea features a compass rose, sailing ship and a sea monster
