Richard entered Somerville Academy, where he pursueda course of instruction for one year. In 1840 he enteredNashville University, at Nashville, Tennessee, completed thecourse in three years, and graduated with honor. In 1839 he was converted, and received the ordinance of. RICHARD B. BURLESON. baptism at the hands of Rev. W. H. Holcombe. In 1841,while a student in Nashville, he was licensed to preach by theFirst Baptist Church, of which Dr. R. B. C. Howell was pas-tor. In 1842 his ordination was called for by the church atAthens, Alabama. He accepted the pastorate, and served thechurch with marked satisfaction for two years. He was called to the care of the church at Tuscumbia in1845, where he remained until 1849, when he was elected bythe Trustees, President of Moult on Female Institute, whichposition he filled for six years.
