I have endea-voured to preserve in this design the character ofthe original, although it differs from the precedingview in some points. Funereal monuments areseen on all sides decorating the rocks from thebase to the summit. On the left hand steps arecut in a ravine which lead to a fortress and toother tombs. As an excursion to them would takeus to a distance from the Fellahs, we felt no diffi-culty in postponing it to another day. Behind the mass of rocks which are seen to theright, there is a tomb that may be considered asm 2 1 Ci-i DEFILE OF IN FRONT OF THE THEATRE a model of the style which chiefly prevails amongthe monuments of Petra. I shall not here un-dertake to settle the points of resemblance whichmight determine their general architectural style:it will be sufficient to exhibit this tomb as a typeof those monuments, and they are by far the mostnumerous, which do not owe their origin to thedomination or the taste of the Romans. The only entrance to Petra is through a narrowravine cut through the rocks, and bordered oneach side by superb tombs. This ravine, so curious in its conformation, was
