Evans, veteran of the Solomons. He saw his best friend killed when he volunteered to remove American troops from a beach dominated by Jap gunfire and remained to the end in self sacrifice that others could live. The friend, Douglas A. Munro, of South Cle Elum, Washington, is a Coast Guard hero with whom Evans had previously shared narrow escapes. Another friend, Coxswain Robert J. Canavan of Chicago, swam 19 hours to safety after Japs had sunk his patrol boat and machine gunned his five mates to death in the water. Evans, who joined the Coast Guard in 1939, is a Chief Signalman. His home is at 1308 Seneca Street, Seattle, Washington.
