Cytosine-guanine DNA base pair. Illustration of a molecular model of the bonding of cytosine (lower left) and guanine (upper right), two of the nucleotide bases found in DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid). Atoms are colour-coded spheres: carbon and hydrogen (white), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) and phosphorus (yellow). These monophosphate deoxyribonucleotide structures include the phosphate groups at each end. The positioning of these bases along the nucleic acid chains is known as the genetic code. Each genetic code is unique and gives organisms their individual characteristics. In this code, cytosine pairs up with guanine.
