The boundary line of onebegan near the present town of Tazewell, on theIllinois river, ran straight to the site of Fort Massac,then followed the Ohio, Mississippi and Illinois to theplace of beginning. This county was called St. to the east of this and south of the Illinois wasknown as Knox county. A court was established atCahokia and the forms of federal government 1795 the settlements in the Illinois country and thecommencement of the courts justified the establishingof another county. A line was drawn a little south ofthe settlement of New Design, east and west from theMississippi, to the Knox county line, and all south ofthat line was called Randolph county. These countylines were frequently changed. We may pause here to take note of an interestingincident in the early history of Cahokia that has butrecently come to light. It is claimed that here in thislittle French village close by the Mississippi, began the
