Christ the Redeemer statue, the world-famous icon of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stands out against clouds drifting across the top of Corcovado mountain in South America. The colossal sculpture of Jesus Christ at the summit of Mount Corcovado was completed in 1931 and stands 98 feet (30 meters) tall with outstretched arms that span 92 feet (28 meters). Made of reinforced concrete covered with soapstone tiles, this Art Deco landmark was created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa.
