As theroad formerly operated on a high tension circuit, the trans-formers for this set step the current down from 13,500 volts volts. The sub-stations at both Winnetka and North Chicagohave been entirely redesigned and contain none of the old equipmentwith the exception of the storage batteries. The interiors of bothof the sub-stations are handsomely finished, the floors being laidwith tile and the side walls being painted red with cream coloredceilings. An interior view of the Winnetka sub-station is shownherewith and its equipment includes two 500-kw. rotary converters, six l8s-kw. air-blast transformers, four remote control oil switchesand one 22-kw. booster for the battery, giving 370 amperes at 60volts. The storage battery, which is located in a wing of the build-ing, consists of 288 cells with tank capacity to allow for an in-crease of 75 per cent. There is a second story to the Winnetka. PL.^N OF OILING SYSTEM. sub-Station which is used for the living apartment of the sub-stationattendant. The North Chicago sub-station is an entirely new building, sepa-rated a few feet from the former sub-station. The interior finish ofthis building is practically the same as that of the Winnetka sub-station and it contains two 3ao-kw. rotary converters, six transformers and one 22-kw. booster, giving 370 amperes at60 volts. This sub-station also contains a battery of 288 cells withtanks of sufficient size to permit an increase of 55 per cent. The Libertyville sub-station, a general view of which is givenherewith, differs from the other sub^stations in being used for botha passenger and express station as well as a sub-station. Its elec-trical equipment includes one 300-kw. rotary converter and threeiio-kw. stationary transformers, with the necessary auxiliary ap-paratus. There is no storage battery used in this sub-station. The machinery
