It does not follow that, because some rods are made with double enamel, that it is the better method. If first class bamboo is used, and the strips are well made and perfectly fitted, noth- 37 RODMAKING FOR BEGINNERS ing can surpass the plain hexagonal rod; butthe difficulty of obtaining good bamboo is greatand is increasing, and it is not always possibleto get material thick enough to make perfecttriangular sections without resorting to thedouble enamel process in butts and joints. Many. rods are now made the centers of which arehollow because of this difficulty of gettingmaterial thick enough to make all strips per-fectly triangular in section. In an attempt to choose between doubleenameled hexagonal bamboo and octagonalbamboo, the former may safely be given pref-erence. In an octagonal rod the butt and mid-dle joint are stronger, provided the caliber islarge, but eight-strip tips consist of so much glueand so little cane that they will not withstand somuch hard usage as will the six-strip cane and38 FISHING ROD MATERIALS frequently give way at the ferrules, particularlyif the parts are carelessly twisted. On the other hand, the gluing of double enamelhexagonal strips is partially protected frommoisture, and if properly made a double enamelrod is strong and powerful. Besides, this method
